MSSDA Sponsored Clinic

The Trial Committee headed by Milissa, has begun working on setting up a clinic.  Again this year, there will be ten dog and handler positions and unlimited auditor positions.  An announcement will be made as soon as a date and clinician are determined.  If you are interested in participating in a dog and handler position, please submit your name to Twila (479-965-2882 or herdingdogs@hotmail.com) and she’ll put your name in the hat.  Participants and alternates will be drawn at the Republic Trial.

As one of her projects, Milissa is putting together a pamphlet on owning and training Border Collies.  If you have any educational information, please send it to her.

Sheep Parasites

There are very few effective sheep wormers (especially for barber pole) on the market, but one that has been effective is copper oxide wire particles (COWP).  The form of copper is poorly absorbed reducing the risk of copper toxicity.  Although it is important to manage parasites using more than one method, research indicates COWP is effective in reducing fecal egg counts in lambs.  There is evidence that lambs received copper from treated ewes in utero and through milk.  The recommended dosage is 0.5 grams to 4.0 grams for hair and wool sheep

David and Twila Leierer began using the COWP this year.  They have 2.0 gram boluses for sale at 10 for $7.50.
